Here are our top tips for kids chatting online to ensure they stay safe:
1. Keep personal details secret
Don’t reveal personal details, including your real name or email address, to people you don’t know.
2. Tell an adult
If someone contacts you online and behaves inappropriately or asks you to do something you’re uncomfortable with, tell an adult.
3. Report it
Additionally, go to the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre (Ceop) website and click the ‘report abuse’ button.

You can keep records of chats, and the police can use these to help track the person down. Check the settings on your IM, or if you’re unsure, ask an adult to help.
