he internet can be an overwhelmingly positive experience for children and teenagers. However, there are some very real risks out there and it’s important that kids are armed with the knowledge they need to be safe and secure online.
Here are our top tips for kids chatting online to ensure they stay safe:
1. Keep personal details secret
Don’t reveal personal details, including your real name or email address, to people you don’t know.
2. Tell an adult
If someone contacts you online and behaves inappropriately or asks you to do something you’re uncomfortable with, tell an adult.
3. Report it
Additionally, go to the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre (Ceop) website and click the ‘report abuse’ button.
3. Save the evidence
You can keep records of chats, and the police can use these to help track the person down. Check the settings on your IM, or if you’re unsure, ask an adult to help.
4. Stick with your buddies
It’s best to only add people you know well to your instant messaging buddy list.
5. Beware of meeting up alone
Never meet anyone that you chat to online unless you are accompanied by a trusted adult.
6. Don’t open strange files
Never open files you aren’t sure about – they could contain viruses or disturbing images.
7. Speak out against bullies
If someone in a chatroom or while instant messaging is being a bully, tell a trusted adult.
